Density of Plastics by ASTM D1505 (ISO 1183 Equivalent)

 Scope:
Density is the mass per unit volume of a material. Density is especially relevant because plastic is sold on a cost per pound basis and a lower density or specific gravity means more material per pound or varied part weight.

Test Procedure:

  • This method determines the material's density by the density-gradient technique.
  • A material is placed in a liquid column of variable density with standard floats of glass beads of known density.
  • The density of the material is then calculated based on its relative position to the floats in the column and the densities of the glass beads.

Specimen size:
Any convenient size.

Data:
Density, kg/m3 = (specific gravity) x (997.6)

This test description is generic, and standards should be obtained from relevant authorities.
